We train to the highest level possible by utilizing the philosophy of conditioned response. By this we mean that certain stimuli elicit specific responses. We utilize psychological methods first advanced by B.F. Skinner and Ivan Pavlov to get our dogs to perform to a high level with a good attitude. Incorporated into this are methods of some world famous dog trainers such as Delmar Smith, Rex Carr. Dobbs, Mike Lardy and Charley Jurney.
We train all of our dogs individually, advancing at the dogs own pace of learning. We use the electronic collar to reinforce known commands for long term consistency in performance. We use minimal electronic collar pressure on all of our dogs with the level of stimulation at the lowest effective level.
We firmly believe in the “trained retrieve” (also referred to as Force Fetch). By training the dogs in the trained retrieve, we will have consistently reliable and dependable retrievers. Dogs trained in this manner know exactly what is expected in the retrieve and perform at a high level with good mouth manners.
Training days usually are scheduled with drills in the A.M. and marking and field work in the afternoons. Our philosophy is to keep the obedience sharp and the dogs mentally stimulated. Whether hunting in the field or running a hunt test or field trial, the dog must be well mannered and in control or the performance will suffer. Sessions are set up to work on specific objectives to keep all of our clients progressing in their training.
We use Bumper Boy remote launchers to introduce and teach concepts. Every
dog has several sessions each week with live or frozen ducks. We find that
the real thing helps to keep a good attitude and high momentum in retrieving.
